Harmful to Minors: The Perils of Protecting Children from Sex is a controversial 2002 book by journalist Judith Levine with a foreword by former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn M. Elders.
Published by the University of Minnesota Press, the book argues that American society’s "sexual politics of fear" and attempts to shield children from sexual information are more harmful than sex itself.
Levine challenges dominant myths surrounding pedophilia, statutory rape, and abstinence-only education, asserting that sex-positive, ethics-based approaches are necessary for healthy adolescent development.
The work won the 2002 Los Angeles Times Book Award for Current Interest but faced intense backlash from conservative groups who accused the authors of legitimizing child abuse, a charge Levine and Elders denied.
